Trans & Diff fluid

How often does everyone replace their cars' transmission and differential fluid? I looked through the Subaru owner's manual but couldn't find anything to indicate how often this should be done.

i try to do it every 40K-50K. i would say if you're unsure just go ahead and do it. i don't know how many miles you have but make sure when you change it to open the fill hole first before the drain just in case the bolt has seized. it would suck to drain your fluids and not be able to refill.

The Evo's manual calls for trans/diff fluid every 30k, I'm sure the STI is something similar

I do it every 10k-15k miles, not because of fluid life but due to metal particles in the fluid. It's completely overkill but cheaper than an oil change.

Ah very good. Thanks everyone. I'm nearing the 30k mark since last changing the fluid, so I think I'll get one of the Subaru fluid change kits at MachV. Good call on opening the fill hole first, then the drain hole - that would be a real downer should the empty differential not be re-fillable.

Secondly, I know Zero Sports makes a magnetic oil drain plug that's supposed to help catch metal particles. Perhaps they make one for the transmission as well...

I hate the smell of gear oil.
